Reverse Engineering Services- Data Model for Product Modification Reverse engineering can be described as the process in which an object, device or system is broken into its constituents to see how each of these parts work together to form one functional unit. This is an important process as it has enabled people to understand how tech works and how it can be used and maximized. It is possible to make improvements through applied technology innovations, making inventions even better. At first, reverse engineering services utilized analog and GPS scanning technology to get spatial data of objects and operating systems. But this is not the case today as many companies have taken to the use of laser scanners for the reverse engineering process. 3D laser scanning has several advantages over the traditional scanning methods, particularly in terms of scanning time and the cost of scanning. Reverse engineering services use laser scanners for a variety of applications but in each case, the scanning results are used to produce models that allow the company to fabricate objects with relative ease. Some of the models include the parametric models, hybrid surface models and the shrink wrap surface models.

The Parametric Models Parametric models convert ideal data from scanned data, and can ignore or incorporate manufacturing defects. This is to say that the parametric model parameters are presented in finite-dimensional parameter that distinguishes them from nonparametric models, semi-nonparametric models, and semi-parametric models. This model is used when 2D drawings are needed, when the surface of a product is required to be smooth, the parts will be built on a scanned part or when the scanning data are conceptually modified.

The Hybrid Surface Models Just like the parametric models, hybrid surface models can convert ideal or realistic data from scanned data and can ignore or incorporate the manufacturing defects. Hybrid surface models are suitable for when the modification of an object requires re-trimming or must be a class-A surfaced. Hybrid surface models, just like their name suggest, are used in the modification of the surface of objects, and are therefore ideal when superficial modifications are made to an object. This model is also ideal when 2D drawings are required when building on or around an object that is scanned or when surface finish of an object must be smooth. Shrinkwrap Surface Model The shrinkwrap surface models are used to take objects in their original state including the manufacturing defects; hence they are ideal for designing parts to accommodate as-built models. Shrinkwrap models are of three types–the surface subset models used to create a collection of exterior surfaces and datum figures; subset surface models, which are used to approximate the visual representation of the original object, and the solid faceted models used to give an approximate representation of the original object.
